After carefully mapping the site and gathering the dreams and needs of the community, the 23I24 edition students designed a harmonious ensemble consisting of a garden pavilion and an earthen oven. This duo has transformed the Pastorie garden, establishing it as a vibrant meeting place for the community.

In February 2025, the official renovation and expansion of the historic Pastorie building will commence, guided by the winning competition design of De Gouden Liniaal and Magma Architects. Informed and inspired by our postgraduate students, the project will prioritize biobased, regenerative, and reuse principles at its core.

Due to budget constraints, professional contractors will only handle the structural work, the building’s exterior, and the extension. Meanwhile, the interior finishes and garden enhancements will remain the responsibility of the Friends of the Pastorie and their dedicated volunteers.

During the previous postgraduate journey, our connection with the community grew so strong and meaningful that we decided to continue this fruitful collaboration. In the 25I26 edition, we will support them in establishing a sustainable model for the Pastorie as an open house, while designing and realizing complementary spatial interventions. These efforts can include reorganizing the attic, creating flexible furniture, developing a library room, and designing a vegetable garden and outdoor workspace—just a few of the many opportunities to make a lasting impact.

Guided by academic insights and practical experience, we will explore the challenges and potential of material harvesting and locality. From revealing the elegance of earth plaster in contemporary architecture to utilizing locally sourced bio-based and fiber-based materials, we aim to create inspiring 'living rooms' for the community.

Ultimately, this journey is driven by a deeper ambition: to showcase the beauty and significance of regenerative and bioregional building practices. Through this project, we aspire to contribute to a global network of changemakers in the built environment, spreading sustainable design principles far and wide.
